Help stop this unfair law change
The Government is asking for public feedback on the proposed law that would let ANZ and ASB off the hook — even though they broke the rules.
This is your chance to have your say.
You don’t need to be a lawyer or write anything fancy. Even a short, simple message makes a difference.
What to say in your submission
Here’s a simple message you can copy and paste - or feel free to make it your own:
I oppose the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Amendment Bill.
This law change would let two powerful banks avoid consequences after they broke the rules. That’s not fair.
The law was clear: if a bank failed to properly disclose loan information, it wasn’t allowed to charge interest and fees. This wasn't a trivial error, the banks breached their disclosure obligations.
Changing the law now, after a court case has already begun, is wrong.
If the Government wants to fix the law for the future, fine - but it shouldn’t take away the rights of thousands of people who were affected in the past.
Please do not support retrospective law changes that protect banks at the expense of ordinary New Zealanders.
Prefer to write your own? Here are a few points you could include:
-
The law should be the same for everyone - even big banks.
-
Retrospective laws are unfair and set a dangerous precedent.
-
This case has been in court for four years. Let it finish.
-
People deserve to be paid back if they were charged wrongly.
-
Future changes are fine - but don’t erase existing rights.
